League of Women Voters
History
 | Judy Feather was one of the League's founding
members. Around 1965, she heard about the League at a Jaycee convention and decided
that Lebanon County could benefit from a nonpartisan, political organization where women
could study issues and learn about government. From her leadership efforts, the
present day LWV of Lebanon County emerged.

|
 | At the YMCA, eleven people attended the first
meeting organized by Judy Feather, Rose Christianson, Esther Kline, Hannah Lazin, Jean
Henry, and Edith Krohn. Reaching 35 members, on May 18, 1966, Lebanon became a
Provisional League. Officers were:
 | Judy Feather, president
|
 | Tina Washington, Vice President
|
 | Marjorie Lockwood, 2nd Vice President
|
 | Esther Kline, Treasurer
|
 | Hannah Lazin, Linda Rowe, Edith Krohn, and
Jean Henry, Board Members.
|
|
 | Other early members included: Clair
Behm, Polly Ehrgood, Monique Guenin, Mary Hoffman, Diana Reilly, Anita Schaffer, Mary
Louise Sherk, and Betty Yeager. Charter members spent the first two years compiling
and publishing a "Know Your County" booklet and garnering the fifty members
required for recognition as a full-fledged Local League by the LWVPA. In 1968 full
status was achieved in time for our League to participate in the study and subsequent
lobbying for the admission of Red China into the United Nations (a very controversial
topic at the time). Our first Finance Drive, held in April 1967, reached its goal of
$400. Some of our early meetings covered topics such as Constitutional Revision,
Charter Commission, and Election Laws. Judge G. Thomas Gates was one of our first
speakers.

|
 | In 1995, Judy Feather and Miriam Davidon were
honored for their dedication and service to the League by being placed on the Anna Estes
Strawbridge Honor Roll that was established as part of the LWVPA's 65th anniversary
celebration to those individuals who have demonstrated energy and commitment to the ideals
and principles of the League. Anna Strawbridge was a founding mother of the LWVPA,
and the honor roll was created in her memory.
|
 | Miriam Davidon was the backbone of the
League's voter service efforts. She joined the League in 1982 and almost
immediately became immersed in her League "career" by editing our Legislative
& Election Directory and planning voter registration efforts. By 1984 Miriam was
a recognized League "expert" on voting, giving a radio interview on WLBR, AM
1270, and issuing press releases about registration rules, election procedures, and voter
registration drives. Other recipients of the Anna Estes Strawbridge award were
 | 1989--Doris Achenbach for Voter Services;
|
 | 1992--Betty Conner for her work in water
protection and service as a League
leader;
|

This 1985 photo documents the Legislative Election Directory published by
the League of Women Voters of Lebanon County. This annual project, a free service to
the citizens of the county, provides information on elected officials and the legislative
areas they serve. Marilyn L. Parker (left) who was the 1985 League president said,
" the brochures...promote political responsibility through active participation of
citizens in government," Miriam Davidon (right) was publications director.
In addition to online, brochures are currently available at public libraries,
banks, post offices, and other public agencies.
